Imagine this your county has been invaded and your fellow countrymen – some six million of them – are asking you to take over leadership. You are just fifteen years old and your training has until now focussed on how to lead an ethical life, how to achieve inner and outer peace. Would you agree to the plea and could you walk the talk? This is the story of the Tibetan leader.
The Dalai Lama Story follows the transformation of a peasant lad of two into the much-loved and widely respected world leader we know today. Its narrative culminates in his dramatic escape from Tibet, dubbed at that time ‘The Greatest Escape of all Time’. It leaves the reader with no doubt as to why – more than 50 years later – he remains unable to return to his homeland.
In the book’s Foreword, the Dalai Lama expresses his ‘hope that the better understanding of the Tibetan situation that readers may find here will ultimately bear fruit in the peace and freedom that we seek’, drawing inspiration from the ‘great symbolic value’ of the ‘unusual but very important angle’ from which the story is told.
The Dalai Lama Story is richly illustrated with pen & ink drawings and photographs, including satellite images of Tibet, showing the escape routes of the Dalai Lama and Heinrich Harrer (Seven Years in Tibet).
The Dalai Lama Story The Making of a World Leader eBook Andrew Crowe Dalai Lama
Although The Dalai Lama Story is written for teenagers, this adult really enjoyed Andrew Crowe’s account of the Dalai Lama’s life. Most of the book tells of the period up until the Dalai Lama’s flight to India in 1959. Although I was familiar with the story and had seen Scorsese’s film, ‘Kundun’, the vivid detail offered in this account added to my ability to imagine life in Tibet during this period. The book excels in providing geographical, cultural and historical detail. Landscapes, animals, clothes, climate and customs all come readily to life. Illustrations are plentiful and include drawings, photos and a satellite map of the escape route used by the Dalai Lama and his companions. In what may be an unusual encounter for a western reader, the love and reverence of the Tibetan people for the Dalai Lama is movingly conveyed.I would happily recommend this book to any teenager of my acquaintance. Though a true story, it reads like a ripping yarn. The tension and uncertainty arising form the unfolding situation between Tibet and China is dramatically but not sensationally told. Some of the important tenets of Buddhism are presented through the story of the Dalai Lama’s life. His own early difficulties with anger and how he overcame this; the meditation practice of taking and sending; his famous statement that one’s enemy is one’s greatest teacher all naturally form part of the story. We are shown the development of this unusual and gifted child into an inspiring leader.
There are some brief chapters at the end of the book that bring us into the present time, touching on what has happened in Tibet since 1959 and on the attitude of today’s China to Tibet, both at the level of government and of a private citizen. There is a moving account of the author’s meeting with the Dalai Lama, and a collection of historical information and references.
I imagine that books dealing with this kinds of subject matter are not mainstream teenage fare, and am delighted that a book of this calibre is available for a teenage audience.

The Dalai Lama Story The Making of a World Leader eBook Andrew Crowe Dalai Lama Reviews
Really riveting. A remarkable story, beautifully told, that lays bare unspeakable tragedy and leaves you, somehow, with hope.
Great book leading you on a journey into Tibet and following the story of the Dalai Lama - Andrew well researched the history starting with the search of his holiness as a young child, following his life making him a world leader. The book is a spiritual adventure and captures anyone including the young reader.
This is a remarkable story that captured, surprised and touched me.
I never realized how harrowing the exit from Tibet became under the constricting Chinese stranglehold.
I bought 2 more for friends.
I liked the journalistic approach. No romancing, a clear rendition on the ordinariness of a very special human being. Easy reading, yet still keep your attention to the very end. Worth reading.
